About us
Spiel Associates is the one of the largest independent book binding machinery distributors in North America. Our innovations have caused us to lead the field of mechanical binding. Our product knowledge in this area is unsurpassed by any company in the world.

Our Story
Spiel Associates Inc. has been solving bindery problems since 1963. Norton Spiel started this company with a small inventory of machines and a straightforward belief: if you understand your customer’s production needs better than anyone else, the right equipment recommendation follows naturally. That philosophy hasn’t changed. Today, Norton’s son Michael runs the business with the same hands-on approach. The business has grown into one of the largest independent bindery equipment distributors in North America.
Staying in this business for over 60 years takes more than a good product catalog. It takes relationships. We’ve been showing up at the industry’s major trade shows since 1968, because that’s where real conversations happen and where customers get to see the equipment running in person. Six decades of consistent presence in this industry has a way of telling people something about who you are.
We’ve also been on the innovation side of this industry from early on. We invented the world’s first automatic plastic coil binder and former, and introduced the first tabletop automatic coil binder. The Coilmaster Jr. found its way into commercial print shops, quick printers, in-plant facilities, and government agencies across the country. That same drive shapes the product lines we represent today, including the Sterling Digibinder line of automatic perfect binders, the Sterling DigiPunchmaster, and the Digibinder PUR series for shops that need the superior adhesion of PUR binding.
What our customers tend to appreciate most isn’t just the breadth of our catalog, it’s the knowledge that comes with it. We’ve seen enough production environments to know that the right machine for one shop isn’t necessarily the right machine for another. We take the time to understand how a bindery actually runs before making a recommendation, and we back that up with service long after the sale. Machines we sold decades ago are still running in shops today, and we think that says something.
We also keep machines in stock rather than ordering to fulfill. In a market where supply chain delays have become routine, that matters. With warehouse locations on both coasts, including our California facility, equipment and supplies reach shops nationwide faster. Whether you’re looking for a new machine, a thoroughly reconditioned piece of used equipment, supplies or just an honest conversation about what your shop actually needs, we’re the place to start.
Our Team
Michael Spiel
President
Michael grew up in the family business and has spent his career at the center of what Spiel Associates does best: matching the right equipment to the way a shop actually runs. He oversees the company’s machine modification and custom integration work, designing solutions that fit a customer’s production workflow rather than asking the customer to adapt to the machine.
Frank Bagrosky
Vice-President
Frank oversees day-to-day operations while assisting with all aspects of the company. Frank has worked in our industry for over 45 years in Service, Engineering, Sales and Management. “Our goal at Spiel Associates is to provide a high-quality product at a reasonable price. This can only be accomplished by understanding the needs of our customer which is most important to us”.
Anthony Marino
Vice-President of Product Development
Anthony leads product development at Spiel Associates, working closely with the machine shop and our manufacturing partners to refine existing equipment and bring new machines to market. His focus is making sure every Sterling® product performs the way a working bindery needs it to, day in and day out.
Gennaro “J.R.” Caputo
Vice-President of Customer Service
J.R. coordinates the day-to-day needs of the service department. “If you call in for service the odds are you will end up speaking to me. I’m the guy who knows what each technician’s bindery machine service strengths are, and I try to channel that to help our customers.”
Chris Odenhal
General Manager
Chris has worked at Spiel Associates for over thirty years and now has the position of General Manager. “I still oversee the parts department due to my broad knowledge of bindery equipment parts. Sometimes I have to fill orders for parts for machines that haven’t been built for decades. That’s a challenge.”
Jeff Farrell
Service Technician
Jeff has an extensive background with presses, folders, paper cutters, perfect binders as well as many other types of finishing equipment. He’s a season veteran of the industry and brings a wealth of knowledge to Spiel Associates.
